Cover To Cover

This week I was shown a slightly modified final cover for Burning Sky. Some of the changes are subtle. Can you spot them?

Older version
New version

An obvious addition I'm thrilled and honored to see is author Laura Frantz's (The Colonel's Lady, Love's Reckoning) endorsement on the front cover.

Thank you so much for your gracious words, Laura!

  1. The newer version is brighter with more color definition. And the blurb added, of course.

    Either way, it's glorious!

    1. Thanks Zan. Yep, I'd be over the moon with either of these covers!

  2. Hi Lori,
Yes, the colors are more vibrant and it's always great to have a blurb on the front cover. Especially one that doesn't detract from the author/title text on the cover. Lovely. BTW, I can't see that little addition at the bottom right; is it a logo?... part of the scenery?

    1. Thanks! That little logo says Reader's Guide Inside. I had fun creating the questions for the Readers Guide. They're for book club discussions or anyone who wants to delve a little deeper into the story.

  3. So beautiful, Lori! It's my favorite cover of the year along with Joanne's. Just stunning. And I'm so honored they used my endorsement. Thank you for letting me be a part of all this. You're such a wonderful friend.

    1. Wow, Laura, it means so much that you like it. I had a dream that your quote would be on the cover. :) Funny, the dreams writers have. Have you ever written in your sleep? I have. Written, edited, plotted.

Kristopher Orr and the design team put so much work into this. I hope later this year to share some behind the scenes photos and tidbits. I've loved it when you and other writers shared those for your book covers. It's a part of the process I find endlessly fascinating. If I wasn't writing books I could imagine a career designing covers would be very satisfying too. I think book cover designers should be celebrated!

    3. Joanne, I was admiring his work on Though My Heart Is Torn last night... right before I dove back into the story. Oh boy. This turn in Lonnie and Gideon's lives is really gripping. I'm thinking about them when I'm not reading and wondering how they will ever get through this. :)

  4. Lori - I echo Laura in that this is one of my favorite covers in a long time. I love the intensity of both, but the more vibrant colors of the second, the way the sky consumes her more, and even the warping of the series imprint, all add to the wild movement of it.

It's a gorgeous cover, Lori, and I can't wait to read it. I can't wait.

    1. Thank you Becky! I particularly like the changes in the sky/clouds that blend with her hair. It has something to do with the story, and Willa's hair, and what Neil MacGregor thinks of it. I'm so tempted to post a quote to show what I mean, but I'm going to make you wait to figure that out!

  5. Your cover is wonderful! I love the new, brighter version embellished with the stellar endorsement from our Christy Award nominee Laura. I also noticed, above, the endorsement from the great Susan Meissner. How exciting!

    1. Thank you, Carla. So glad you stopped by. I'm so blessed by the writers who took the time to read Burning Sky and gave me encouragement. Sometimes God does exceedingly, abundantly, beyond what I could have asked or imagined.

  6. Lori, I just love this cover. It has such a uniqueness about it for the era. She remains such a mystery here, just beckoning us to know her story. It's gorgeous. And love, love, love those endorsements by Laura and Susan. So amazing! I'm so happy to see all your hard work and passion come to life in this book.

    1. Thank you. I'm still pinching myself most days. God is good. So are a bunch of folk over at WaterBrook and in the writing community. I was blown away by the support from so many for Burning Sky. :)

  7. Ohhhh, love this cover, LOVE it.

Okay, there is more 'heat' in the new cover, more yellows and oranges. The landscape and river are slightly different. Her shoulder is less prominent. The blue 'bead' logo is larger and more bold. The reader's guide and Laura's endorsement are new.

All this, and yet I never win those baby shower games when you have to name everything on the tray after they give you a minute to look and then cover it up.

    1. Jennifer, it doesn't show in this pic but the river image is now wrapped around the spine of the book, so it's all still there, just wider appearing on the cover. The bead circle was rebuilt, I'm told. I like it both ways. It's lighter and more polished looking now and maybe easier to read.

Those colors really pop. I'm a low-key color girl (my friends get excited if I wear something that isn't brown or green or gray), and so that one aspect about the cover took some getting used to. But I'm loving it now.

You should win those baby shower games! That's just wrong.
